The Manc is a British social media publisher and news and entertainment company with a focus on the region of Greater Manchester after which the brand is named (a Manc being a Manchester dialect).[1] The Manc was founded by Sam Ridgway[2] who is also editor-in-chief.[3]
History
The Manc began in 2014 by posting nostalgic pictures of Manchester on Facebook. The founder, Sam Ridgway, was soon hired by UNILAD as its first employee.[4] Ridgway kept his page alive during his tenure at UNILAD, but the firm went into administration in October 2018 and was acquired by LADbible – at which point Ridgway left to focus on The Manc.
Following a pivot towards news and away from a strategy of only publishing photographs and pictures, The Manc had become North West England's largest online social news platform by 2019.
In July 2020, as the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown began to lift across the UK for the hospitality sector, Ridgway and his team directed The Manc's large following towards a social cause.[5]
